The Ramadan War, as the only civilizational war of the modern era

English

The wars of the modern era, ranging from the religious wars in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to the national wars among European states in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and ultimately the two World Wars and other scattered conflicts in the contemporary period, which were ideological in nature, have all occurred within the identity and civilizational boundaries of modernity. None of these wars possessed either the capacity or the aspiration to transcend the ideals and ends of modern culture and civilization and its ideologies. The aggression of the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran during Ramadan in the year 1404 SH (the Ramadan War) resulted in a Sacred Defense and comprehensive resistance on the part of the Iranian nation, constituting a continuation of the civilizational confrontation between Iranian-Islamic culture and secular Western culture, a confrontation that, in particular, began with the Islamic Revolution of Iran. Why the Ramadan War can be defined as a civilizational war is a fundamental question that determines its essential difference from other modern wars and is addressed in this article. Employing an analytical method and drawing on a comparative study of Iranian-Islamic and Western civilizations, as well as an analysis of their civilizational layers and the manner in which these layers confront one another and extend into military confrontation, this study concludes that the Ramadan War acquires a civilizational character due to its necessary and historical connection with this civilizational confrontation. It thus transcends the identity and civilizational boundaries of modernity and, unlike the wars of the modern era, does not occur within this civilization; rather, it emerges from a different civilizational origin in confrontation with it. Therefore, it can be argued that it is the only civilizational war (following the eight-year Sacred Defense) to have occurred in the modern era, as it is the only war that brings to the fore a confrontation between two distinct civilizations. The Ramadan War constitutes a civilizational confrontation between a civilization that, since the Enlightenment and through a secular approach, has put forward various ideological projects for human life on Earth and has ultimately encountered the crisis of nihilism in the contemporary era, and an emerging civilization rooted in the Iranian-Islamic tradition that promises to liberate humanity from the alienation and distortion caused by Western nihilism.
