Modern political science, shaped under the humanistic orientation of the European Renaissance, was initially marked by Machiavelli’s idea of the “separation of politics from ethics” and subsequently developed on the basis of Hobbes’s secular and mechanistic approach. It was later consolidated by Enlightenment political thinkers. By departing from the teleological and virtue-oriented foundations of political wisdom (ḥikmah ʿamaliyyah), modern political science redefined its subject from “government oriented toward justice and virtue” to “power,” and, through a mechanistic interpretation of power, focused on the laws governing its production, distribution, exercise, and control. Given this orientation, modern political science is incompatible with the epistemological, cultural, and civilizational foundations of the Iranian-Islamic context and thus cannot effectively address societal challenges or contribute to Iran’s civilizational outlook. The efficiency of political science within this framework requires a paradigmatic transformation toward governance understood as the stewardship of the social order. Such a fundamental transformation shifts the priority of political science from power to policymaking and the supervision of the social system, grounded in the capacities of the Iranian-Islamic tradition, thereby enabling its effectiveness in advancing a civilizational vision.
