The topic of media literacy has been the focus of Western societies for several decades and is discussed as a specialized knowledge in academic centers. The aim of this research is to examine the state of media literacy in Iran and the criticisms of the education-focused approach in this field. The main question of the research is whether media literacy is sufficient for the Islamic society. What distinguishes the media education approach from media literacy? The method of this research is qualitative. The data for this study are collected from library sources and reputable scientific research articles. The results of the research indicate that the existing media literacy approach in Iranian society has three fundamental flaws: 1- Focus on cognition and being education-oriented, 2- The centrality of media in it, and 3- Focus on the individual to deal with media harms. The present research suggests the “media education” approach as an educational-civilizational approach in Islamic society. Media education is “a free and conscious endeavor to actualize human instincts in a world saturated with media, centered around the institution of the family, with the ultimate goal of achieving human existential perfection and attaining divine proximity.” Three main components, 1- Being developmental, 2- Family-centeredness, and 3- Holistic view, are discussed as the most important elements of media education. In conclusion, the necessity of the media education approach in a civilizational perspective is also noted.
