Identity differentiation in the daily life of Iranians is still ongoing and prevalent, and identity boundaries and the resulting conflicts represent the present (in the Foucaultian sense) of the issue of the present research; in such a way that the moments of dual formation of “Iranianity and Islam” as the determining frameworks of identity discourses are the criterion and basis of the aforementioned differentiation (the history of the present). Accordingly, based on Foucault’s theoretical-methodological framework, the central question of the present article is: when and through what mechanisms did identity differentiation based on the duality of “Iranianity and Islam” as the organizing cores of the power-knowledge system in Iran become a problem for Iranians, and what basically happened that Iranians’ identification based on the aforementioned duality became problematic? In other words, if we were to refine the question from an archaeological perspective, if this duality had not emerged, would this identity differentiation still exist among Iranians today? And in that case, would it be possible to imagine a different kind of discourse than the one we are currently facing? (Event). This identity differentiation in contemporary Iranian historiography is, in fact, the product and consequence of the “dualistic” historiography and discourses of Mirza Fathali Akhundzadeh and Mirza Agha Khan Kermani (degree zero). Akhundzadeh and Kermani are the main carriers, figures, and agents of the formation of the discursive formulation of “identity differentiation” based on the duality of “Iranianity and Islamicity.” This article attempts to explain, using Foucault’s theoretical-methodological framework, how this discursive formulation was formed and the accumulation and density of the statements surrounding it through the connection of concepts, topics, and strategies (discursive formulation). The duality of “Iranianity and Islamism” dates back to the pre-constitutional period and the writings and writings of Mirza Fathali Akhundzadeh and Mirza Agha Khan Kermani.
