Abstract

This study aims to examine the news media sources of Tehran’s citizens and their relationship with political trust and political participation in 2024 (1403 AH). Given the crucial role of media in shaping political attitudes, the research investigates how different patterns of media consumption influence citizens’ trust in governmental institutions and their level of engagement in political processes. The main research question asks: What is the relationship between Tehran citizens’ preferred news sources and their political trust and participation?
To answer this question, a survey method was employed, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire. The statistical population consisted of 406 residents of Tehran, selected through stratified random sampling across the city’s 22 districts in 2024. The sample size (406 participants) was determined using Cochran’s formula, and the collected data were analyzed using statistical software.
Findings based on weighted data analysis indicate that consumption of domestic media is positively associated with higher political trust and participation, particularly among older and middle-class groups. In contrast, the use of foreign and opposition media—especially among younger and more educated citizens—correlates with lower political trust and greater political apathy. Moreover, transparency in news delivery and the attractiveness of domestic media content were identified as key factors influencing audience preference.
Accordingly, the study suggests that reforming domestic media policies toward greater content diversity, enhanced transparency, and improved media literacy can play a significant role in rebuilding public trust and strengthening political participation.
